 Job Summary

This is a non-sworn position responsible for providing additional support to the Canton Police Department and the community by increasing visibility, observation, and reporting, enhancing community policing efforts, increasing community outreach and performing protection activities that do not require actions by sworn police officers. 

Major Duties

  • Responds non-emergency to calls for service.
  • Patrols parks, neighborhoods, and businesses for increased visibility.
  •  Performs community outreach; assists with crime prevention and public relations programs.
  •  Serves as first point of contact for those in need of assistance, provides support, and refers citizens to city services.
  •  Documents observations and actions by radioing information and completing reports.
  •  Provides first aid assistance in the event of medical emergencies; radios for medical assistance as needed.
  •  Provides assistance and backup support to officers and emergency service providers as necessary.
  •  Provides traffic direction as needed for events such as parades, funerals, events, and school crossings.
  •  Testifies in judicial proceedings as necessary.
  •  Completes all required reports and forms, including accident and incident reports.
  •  Inspects and maintains assigned vehicle, uniform, and equipment.
  •  Participates in field training activities as assigned.
  •  Performs related duties.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required of the Position

  • Knowledge of city ordinances, relevant federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, and department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow departmental policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of a computer and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in operating vehicles and assigned equipment.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, running, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is performed indoors, in a vehicle, and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather, infectious diseases, and potentially dangerous and life-threatening situations. The work requires the use of specialized equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Possession of a valid Georgia driver's license and a satisfactory driving history
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical, background check, polygraph test, and drug screening
