The City has made the hard decision to remove one of the large hardwood trees in Downtown's Brown Park. After evaluation and certification from a local arborist, it has been officially determined that the Scarlet Oak is in severe decline.
There are several large areas of decay on the main trunk, and in the lower canopy at the main fork, there are cavities and/or dieback in most of the major branch leads. Considering the tree's location over a heavily populated play area for children, no amount of trimming or any treatments will deem this tree "safe."
Brown Park will be closed for the tree removal starting the evening of Sunday, July 20, and is anticipated to reopen by Thursday, July 24 (weather-permitting).
We thank you for your understanding, and please know there are two other large trees in Brown Park still available for shade and enjoyment!
