The Georgia Main Street Program, housed within the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, today announced that Canton and Suwanee have been designated as Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) communities. They join a distinguished group of cities recognized for their commitment to downtown revitalization, economic development, and community innovation.
The GEMS designation is awarded to cities that exemplify excellence in implementing the Main Street Approach, demonstrating a strong track record of success in preserving local character while driving economic growth. This recognition reflects the significant achievements Canton and Suwanee have made in creating vibrant downtowns that serve as economic and cultural hubs for their regions.
Both communities bring unique strengths to the GEMS network. Suwanee is known for its dynamic public spaces and forward-thinking planning, while Canton has made remarkable strides in small business development, community events, and fostering a strong sense of place. Their inclusion in the GEMS program highlights their leadership and dedication to building thriving, resilient downtowns.
“These cities have shown what’s possible when local leadership, community engagement, and strategic planning come together,” said Cherie Bennett, Director of the Office of Downtown Development at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. “We are proud to welcome Canton and Suwanee into the GEMS family and look forward to the continued impact they will make across the state.”
GEMS communities represent the top tier of Main Street programs in Georgia, serving as models for other cities seeking to enhance their downtowns through preservation-based economic development. These communities not only meet rigorous performance standards but also contribute to the broader success of the Main Street movement.
