The City of Canton is moving forward with a major improvement project designed to strengthen the connection between two of Canton’s Downtown destinations: Historic Downtown and The Mill on Etowah. The West Main Street Pedestrian Corridor project will create a safer, more walkable, and more welcoming route for residents and visitors, reflecting the community’s vision for a vibrant, connected Downtown area. 

"This project bridges a critical gap between The Mill on Etowah and the heart of Downtown, making it safer and easier for residents to walk, bike, and explore," said City Engineer Bethany Watson. "By improving these street connections, we’re uniting two thriving areas and creating a seamless flow that makes it easier for everyone to access and enjoy everything our Downtown has to offer."

Improvements include: 

• One‑Way Traffic & Angled Parking — Converting W. Main Street to a one‑way westbound roadway will open space for angled parking, making it easier for residents and visitors to support local businesses.

• Expanded Sidewalks — A new 10‑foot sidewalk with brick pavers will give pedestrians, whether on foot or by bicycle, more room to move comfortably and safely.

• Underground Utility Conversion — Relocating overhead utility lines underground will enhance the corridor’s historic charm.

• Streetscape Beautification — Decorative lighting, landscaping, and public benches will create a warm, inviting environment that encourages people to slow down, explore, and enjoy Canton’s small‑town character.

• Drainage & Utility Infrastructure Improvements — Upgraded water and sewer mains and new storm drains will support long‑term infrastructure health and improve stormwater management for nearby neighborhoods and businesses.

The West Main Street Pedestrian Corridor is truly an investment in community connection. By improving walkability, supporting local businesses, and enhancing the everyday experience of moving through Downtown, the City of Canton is continuing its commitment to building a community that feels welcoming and accessible.

Construction is expected to begin in early fall and will take approximately 20 months to complete.
