On August 20, 2026, the Canton City Council approved the FY 2027 Budget, which includes $852,111 in reductions from the original proposal. Earlier in the month, the Council also voted to keep the City’s millage rate at 5.250 mills, ensuring that property taxes do not increase for residents, even as Cherokee County raised its fire millage rate from 2.888 to 3.023 mills.

The County’s increase added about $728,000 to the City’s cost for fire services compared to the prior year. The Proposed Budget anticipated an increase of about $625,000, leaving a gap of about $103,000. Staff reviewed the budget closely and identified responsible ways to reduce spending without reducing programs or services residents rely on. Savings came from modifying contractual spending and tightening everyday operating costs like small equipment, supplies, and employee training and related travel.

These adjustments help the City operate more efficiently, stretch taxpayer dollars further, and prepare for future needs, all while keeping essential services running smoothly.
