The Canton City Council sets all policies for the City including fiscal and administrative policy. The councilmembers' terms of office are for four years. Elections occur every two years so terms are staggered. The current Mayor Pro Tem is Farris Yawn; he takes on the role of mayor when Mayor Grant is absent. All wards are city-at-large positions with geographic residency requirements.

The governing body of the City of Canton is the City Council that establishes local law and policies through the enactment of ordinances and resolutions. Regular City Council meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the first and third Thursday each month at Canton City Hall located at 110 Academy Street. The City Council may postpone or cancel any meeting as deemed necessary.

(4 Year Term) Term Expires 12/2027

Travis Johnson is in his first term as a councilmember. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Travis moved around throughout the Carolinas at a young age before graduating from Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, SC. He holds a bachelor’s degree from nearby Reinhardt University in Sociology with a Concentration in Criminal Justice and Environmental Science and graduate studies under Senior Scientist, Dr. J Vaun McArthur of the University of Georgia at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory where they researched and studied antibiotic resistance to Kanamycin, Tetracycline and Amoxicillin in Coastal Carolina bodies of water. Johnson has held leadership roles in logistics, sales and most recently, is the Southeast District Manager for Fidia Pharma USA Inc. in the medical device industry.

In November of 2023, Travis graduated from the Canton Citizen’s Police Academy. In 2021, Travis was appointed to the Canton Housing Authority where he served until being elected to the City Council at the end of 2023. In 2020, Travis ran for State Senate in District 14 where he was ultimately defeated by the longtime incumbent who went on to become Georgia’s Labor Commissioner. That experience planted the seed in him to simply want to make a difference in the community. However, that experience showed Travis that partisan politics was not how and where he wanted to affect change. This is why he sought the City Council that is non-partisan, with the sole focus on the business needs and decision-making for the City of Canton. Travis states that “all he ever wanted to do was make a difference” and serving the community allows him to do just that.

Passionate about the community, public safety, economic growth and development, Travis brings a practical, yet logical and strategic approach to the council and looks forward to working for and serving the people of the City of Canton.

Residing in Laurel Canyon, he and his wife Leah have 2 school aged girls, Morgan and Nora.
