The Department

The Building & Safety Services Department supports the safety and quality of life for the residents and visitors of the City of Canton through enforcement of the Building Code. The permitting and inspection process promotes high-quality design standards as well as the conservation, rehabilitation and reuse of the City's existing buildings.

The Position

This position is responsible for performing all functions related to the enforcement of the State of Georgia minimum standard construction codes and all referenced standards for all buildings, including, but not limited to reviewing and approving construction documents; making on-site inspections (building, electrical, framing, footing/slabs, HVAC, plumbing, insulation, erosion and sediment control, gas, and water); prepare written reports; maintain records (including computer records); issue notices of code violations and deficiencies. Read, research, and objectively explain and interpret code requirements along with other laws pertaining to regulation of buildings, orally and in writing; maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and standards and new codes and changes to existing codes.

Minimum Requirements

Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Must possess an International Code Council (ICC) Residential Combination Inspector certification.
An incumbent in this position may be designated "Building & Safety Services Inspector II” with the possession of commercial combination inspector certification.

Starting salary for this position is $22 - $26 per hour dependent upon qualifications & experience.
