May 4 – Canton Main Street kicks off the 2018 season of First Friday events in downtown Canton. May the Fourth be With You is the theme, and The Loose Shoes Band will perform on our stage from 6 – 9 p.m. First Friday is a downtown Canton block party that includes a classic car display, children’s activities and a great selection food vendors. Many of our downtown shops stay open during the evening, and our award-winning restaurants all provide reservations.
May 5 – Dumpster Day and Shredding Day - City cleanup day with dumpsters and electronic recycling at City Hall from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Shredding will be provided by 1st Secure Shredding from 8 – 12 for $5 per copy paper box. Go to cantonga.gov for a list of included acceptable items.
May 4 & 5 ~ “Mary Poppins, Jr.” by Hasty Drama Club from Hasty Elementary School with performances on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available at The Canton Theatre.
May 11 to 20 ~ “Angel Street” by Patrick Hamilton, a classic psychological thriller set in Victorian times presented by the Cherokee Theatre Company. For information go to Cherokeetheatre.org.
May 30 ~ “Citizens Response for Active Shooter” informational meeting and presentation from the Canton Police Department at 6;30PM.
Cherokee County Historical Society
May 5 – The Cherokee County Historical Society presents - The 15th annual Derby Day celebration. Big Hats, Bold Bets & Bourbon will take place at the Rock Barn on May 5th at 3:30 p.m. Call the Historical Society’s office for tickets.
Cherokee Arts Center Presents:
Canton Festival of the Arts, sponsored by the Cherokee Arts Council, will be held in and around Brown Park on Saturday and Sunday, May 19 & 20, from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The festival features a fine arts market, children’s area, Serenity Gardens, and plenty of food and music to enjoy.
May 12 – 13 – The 29th Annual Mothers’ Day Pow Wow and Indian Festival in Boling Park. Saturday (10:00 – 6:00) and Sunday (11:00 – 6:00)
May 16 is the next meeting of A Novel Idea at East Main Café beginning at 7:00 p.m. The May program is on Historical Fiction.
The Summer Series of Movies in Brown Park, sponsored by Northside Hospital, begins on May 26th with Disney’s “Coco” at sundown. Bring your blanket or lawn chair.
The $1 Kids Summer Movie Series at the Historic Canton Theatre, sponsored by Canton Main Street, begins on June 8 with “Finding Dory”. Tickets go on sale one hour prior to show time at the theatre box office. $1 concessions are available, and seats are first come, first served.
A 7-week summer cornhole league begins in Canton on Tuesday, June 12th. Play times are 6:45, 7:30, and 8:15pm. All teams play a best of three series against an opponent at their same skill level. All teams participate in playoffs and qualifying teams represent their location at the Cornhole ATL City Championship. Register by June 4th at cornholeatl.com.
